Alex Amy Allen

I am Alex Amy Allen, a graphic designer specialising in editorial design, motion and typography. My practice focuses on understanding the relationship between design and function, which is presented through my bookmaking projects. Within these publications, I explore human relationships such as how people interact with digital spaces and the relationships with one another. My further work explores the use of type, code and movement to create generative design systems. One of my favourites, ‘5JR’ includes the exploration of a grid system and user input to create different outcomes.

5JR

5JR is a coding project using P5.JS, an online javascript library for creative coding, where I merged my love for typography and movement. The project explores a grid system which displaces the ‘5JR’ with user input through toggles. I created the 5jr through a small experiment of linking together random letters and numbers to see how they could connect. I wanted to see how far you can push them away from their original form while remaining recognisable.

My Final Major Project, titled ‘****’ encapsulates a visual journey of unlocking, where illustrations and typography converge to invite you to question the codes we use to safeguard our digital spaces. The A6 book explores digital passcodes, with the purpose of carrying the viewer on a voyage of unlocking.

Neal Street

A coptic bound A5 book exploring Dr Martens Neal Street, focusing on the staff and stores features, including my portraiture photography and interviews to capture the essence of the shop. This was an important project to me as working with these people made my experience in London amazing. Designed over the course of a month, every detail was carefully considered to create this special book. I worked at Dr Martens during my university years, and used this book as a way to thank them for their support. I wanted that love and care to show within the book, which holds precious polaroids at the back in a handmade frame.
