Jana Malaikah

Jana Malaikah is a graphic and media designer based in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia and London.

Her work explores themes of identity, culture, land, and personal narrative. Her working methodology consists of research and investigation, analogue exploration, and combining print and digital processes to enhance her concepts.

She often utilises Arabic calligraphy and type in her work as a way to connect to the Arabic language. She has found history, heritage, and linguistics to always be a source of inspiration for her work.

Sinwaan

Sinwaan is an Arabic word which means multiple palm trees in one collective space.

Sinwaan is an Arabic experimental display typeface, inspired by the structure of the date palm tree, highlighting its bold and geometric form. It serves as a symbol for the significance and high value of the palm tree in Saudi Arabia.

Characterised by diagonal lines and distinct angles the type exudes a strong visual impact, whilst the small diamond dots add both contrast and visual balance. Furthermore, the unique form of the typeface allows it to be used to create intriguing and captivating patterns and visual imagery.

Type Transformation

Type Transformation: Sinwaan Stamped is an explorative journey of generative design outcomes utilising a specified set of letterforms and colours.

Through a series of workshops, participants delve into the intricacies of abstract modular letterforms using Sinwaan, an Arabic typeface, designed by myself.

The type takes the physical form of stamps, introducing the analogue process of stamping and printing to create different compositions.

Encouraging playful experimentation with the stamps will expand the use of the type as a method of image-making and generative design.

Palmscapes

The date palm, often perceived as a mere backdrop in the vast landscapes of Saudi Arabia, is re-examined through a series of artistic and analytical lenses.

From the detailed manipulation of photography to the abstract play of colours, and from nuanced studies of form and shape to the tactile art of papermaking, this exploration invites readers to see beyond the tree’s outward uniformity.

By focusing closely on the intricate details that make up each tree, this visual journey shifts perspectives, deepening appreciation for the date palm’s complexity and its integral role in the cultural and ecological narratives of the Kingdom.
