This is a publication about screens. The definition of screen is “a white or silvered surface where pictures can be projected for viewing”. Symmetry and reflection has always been attractive to me magically since I started to make art.
Moreover, mirrors always appear as some kind of magical spirits with evil power in all kinds of mythology and fairy tales, and always make people either mad or dead in the end. For example, the magic mirror in Snow White, the mirror of erised in Harry Potter, the reflection of Narcissus which makes him dead in the lake, etc.
And I think if this kind of magic mirror has a modern world version, it must be digital screens, like computers, phones and so on. The phone also makes people stare at them all day long as they keep showing what people want to see. Sometimes when I stare at the discover page of Instagram and TikTok, I have a strange feeling of staring at myself. What is it exactly reflecting in the screen, and what have I been watching by staring at the screen? I think it would be interesting if I link the mythology and digital world together.
