Suhyoung Bae

Hello, this is Suhyoung from Seoul and now based in London, I am a passionate designer with a deep appreciation for art, particularly graphic design. I am dedicated to exploring new approaches to design, with a specialisation in art direction, brand identity, and video art.

The main interests and inspirations for my work include memories that evoke nostalgia, the exploration of ironic emotions or elements, and addressing social issues through branding and art direction to effectively communicate with audiences.

Mirage... or Liberation?

I’ve always felt pressure from various sources, struggling to stay in the moment due to worries about the future and regrets about the past. I yearned to be liberated from this cycle and eventually realised that focusing on the present was crucial. I decided to appreciate the preciousness of the present moment.

Embracing the idea that “every moment is not forever,” I visualised this concept through pixelated image sequences, representing something diffusing, scattering, and pixelating like a mirage. This project expresses the value of the present moment and my journey to liberation through facial expressions, body movements, and hand gestures, conveyed in both a book and an animation.

Seoul Memories Drinking Club

Brand identity and art direction for the cocktail bar ‘Seoul Memories Drinking Club’ inspired by the last summer memories in Seoul, South Korea.

It was the first time I enjoyed a night in Seoul as an adult last summer in 2022. I explored distinct areas in Seoul city and experienced the different ambiences and vibes of bars, areas called ‘Itaewon’, ‘Jongno’, and ‘Gangnam’, which impressed me.

I tried visualising not only each different area’s aesthetic as a cocktail menu but also branding to identify the overall concept for the bar.

This is the first cocktail of SMDC, glass ‘Gangnam’. Other menus are coming up soon!

Desire to Waste

Brand identity for the exhibition, conference, and events series hosted at Victoria and Albert Museum entitled ‘Desire to Waste’.

This project explores the concept of the desire to waste, highlighting both tangible and intangible aspects. In modern society, rapid production and consumption are prevalent, affecting physical items like single-use products and fast food, as well as digital content such as TikTok videos, Instagram reels, and online memes.

I focused on the contrast between discarded objects and their surroundings in my street photography. To reflect human interaction with these elements, I incorporated CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA systems into the brand identity, using their fonts and grid layouts.
